(CNN) -- In his first public remarks since delivering his victory speech three days ago, President-elect Barack Obama vowed Friday that restoring the nation's economic equilibrium will be a priority of his administration.
"I do not underestimate the enormity of the task that lies ahead," Obama told reporters at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. "We have taken some major action to date, and we will take further action."
Obama said that passing a stimulus package will be his first move if the lame-duck Congress fails to do so before he takes office January 20.

As the eulogies wash over Barack Obama, he can at least rely on his wife Michelle Obama - America's next First Lady - to bring him down to earth.
Others may gush over her husband but Michelle Obama, not only the first black First Lady but one of the youngest presidential wives since Jackie Kennedy, likes to be brutally honest about him. Unlike some First Ladies, the 44-year-old Princeton and Harvard Law School graduate, and working mother of two, is certainly her own woman. In her words, she doesn't want to be "so tied to all that (Barack) is that I don't have anything for me".
Critics have labelled her arrogant, haughty, cold and an "angry black woman". Supporters portray her instead as independent-minded, unafraid to speak out and a devoted mother who puts family firmly before career.

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1980, my 10th-grade American history teacher started class by unfurling The New York Times. She pointed to its triple banner headline: ¨Reagan Easily Beats Carter; Republicans Gain in Congress; D'Amato and Dodd are Victors.〃
¨Save this paper,〃 she told us. ¨This is the start of a whole new era.〃
And it was. An era of unbridled deregulation, wealth-enhancing perks for the already well-off, and miserly indifference to the poor and middle class; of the recasting of greed as goodness, the equation of bellicose provincialism with patriotism, the reframing of bigotry as small-town decency. read more...

Text of Obama's victory speech
|
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, Chicago, Illinois: Text of President-elect Barack Obama's victory speech in Chicago on Tuesday, as released by his campaign:
If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. read more...

No melamine found in new milk powder in 7th round of tests |
China's quality watchdog said on Saturday the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no trace of melamine.
It was the seventh round of tests for the industrial chemical since the report of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

By Brian K. Sullivan and Alex Morales
|
|
|
Gustav buffeted the Gulf Coast with hurricane-force winds, threatening devastation to rival Katrina, after the largest evacuation in Louisiana history turned New Orleans into what its mayor called a ``ghost town.''
``Let's prepare for the worst, pray for the best,'' state Governor Bobby Jindal said in a televised news conference yesterday. He said 1.9 million people fled coastal areas on jammed roads and mass transit, leaving behind only 10,000 of New Orleans' 300,000 residents. The city's population decreased 40 percent since Katrina hit in 2005.. read more...

As G8 leaders arrive in Japan for another summit, more will again be said than done.

Like previous gatherings of this self-appointed elite among national economies, this year's will see member countries posturing seriously on goals they have little intention of achieving. So, prepare for yet more preaching than sacrifice, or even leadership by example. read more... |
